Hotel California, family self portrait series





Milan, Italy. One of the hardest hit by the COVID19.

This was back in early January, when we still had high hopes that 2020 would be a normal year.
It is kind of ironic that in our ignorance we painted such a predictive future. confined in a small space. not quite clear what is going on beyond it .... reeps of claustrophobia.

Thirty five days in total lockdown, RT still going up. And counting.....



The family self portrait  project started in January 2011. 
I take one portrait of the whole family, myself included, once a month.  
In late 2013 a "ghost" writer joined the initiative and now each photo is accompanied by a poem.
In 2015 the kids started collaborating and introducing their own ideas
...the project has a life of its own

the days are long



The days are long and repetitive. There is no opportunity to go out, to hang out with friends... so we have to stay creative. The trampoline meant to keep them moving and interested to be outdoors is also now referred to as the "star gazer". Off they went for a night of movies and stories in the moonlight

all the wild horses - photo post

Colombia
San Andres Island, Colombia (2002)

Few people have heard of these Colombian islands. It remains true and Anglophone Caribbean, Slow and sleepy. The entire island canbe surrounded in a motorcycle in less than an hour. On one side the horizon hides the motherland, Colombia. Land full of confl  fromits deepest bowels. On the other side farther still lies Africa, red earth that these quiet inhabitants carry in their DNA and from whichthey were brutally torn away. Memory engraved in their dark skin. And in the middle of these two reali- ties, these Afro-Colombianslive in harmony with nature.

Poca gente ha escuchado hablar de estas islas colombianas. Es el Caribe puro y anglófono. Lento y adormecido. La isla entera se puede rodear en motocicleta en menos de una hora.  A un lado
el horizonte esconde la madre patria, Colombia. Tierra llena de conflictos desde sus mas tiernas entrañas. Al otro lado el horizonte de África, mas lejano aun, tierra roja que llevan en su ADN estos habitantes tranquilos y de la que fueron brutalmente arrancados. Memoria grabada en su piel oscura. Y en medio de estas dos realidades estos afrocolombianos conviven en armonía con la naturaleza.

Road to nowhere

The desert surrounds the city and engulfs it. Dirt streets connect the bustle of the city with the sea, effectively turning the desert into a silence between two notes.

Mauritania was the last country in the world to abolish slavery in 1981. It took another sixteen years, until  2007 for it to it be criminalized. and still, and in spite of this, some estimate that up to 17% of the Haratine population still lives effectively  in slavery. Many of the freed slaves continue to work for their formermasters for lack of other opportunities. These roads - for many of those who walk them, really do not lead anywhere.

El desierto rodea la ciudad y se la come. Calles de tierra conectan el bullicio de la ciudad con el mar, convirtiéndose así el desierto en un silencio entre dos notas.

Mauritania fue el ultimo país del mundo en abolir la esclavitud en 1981. Tuvieron que pasar mas años, hasta el 2007, para que se criminalizara. Aún así, algunos estiman que hasta un 17% de la población Haratina sigue en situación de esclavitud.  Muchos de los esclavos liberados continúan trabajando para sus antiguos amos a falta de otras oportunidades. Estos caminos -para muchos de los que los patean, realmente no llevan a ninguna parte.
